Petrol money saving ideas

Petrol pump prices appear to be constantly on the increase at the moment so wwe have listed below some useful tips to reduce your petrol expenditure.

1. Shop around for the cheapest petrol station by using websites such as Petrolprices and Findcheappetrol. Just remember that because a petrol station is the cheapest this week doesn’t guarantee that it will be the cheapest next week so remember to keep shopping about.

2. Sign up to the Pipeline card, this is a group of motorists who intend to reward their members with a discount of between 5p to 7p per liter on their petrol costs.

3. Try to reduce your cars consumption of petrol by avoiding sudden acceleration and harsh braking as this evens out your fuel consumption and improves the efficiency of your cars engine.

4. Reduce your average speed from 70 mph down to 50 mph as this will reduce your petrol consumption.

5. Travel when the roads are less congested will save you petrol as your car drinks more petrol when you are driving slowly and continually stopping.

6. Avoid having a roof rack on your car unless you are using it as the will lead to your car consuming more petrol as your car will not be as aerodynamic.

7. Reduce any non essential stuff that you keep in your boot as the heavier the load the more pressure on your engine and the more fuel your car consumes.

8. Check your tyres as if these are kept at the right pressure your car will be more fuel efficient and you will save more money.

9. Simply keeping the windows closed on your car will improve its aerodynamics and reduce your petrol consumption.

10. Avoid leaving the engine running when your car is stationery.

11. Avoid getting lost and wasting unnecessary petrol by planning your route in advance.

12. If you are only going down the road to buy a paper why not walk instead of taking the car.

13. Car share with a colleague at work

14. Use public transport such as the buses or trains as they may be cheaper than taking the car and can be more relaxing but you do have to plan your journey round their timetables.

15. Consider buying fuel efficient cars such as hybrid cars which run on a mixture of electricity and petrol.
